Paris 1861. Detective Paul Picard is hot on the trail of Ric Lazare, the brilliantly charismatic gypsy conjurer, who has won over Parisian elites with his miraculous fortune-telling machine. After receiving a fortune predicting his own death, Picard sets off on a trip across Europe to investigate Lazare's past in order to expose him as a fraud before he gains control over the Emperor and the destiny of France.

Soon Picard finds himself hurled headlong into a web of gypsy magic, murder, seduction and mystery that leads him through Germany to Austria, the Hungarian steppes, and back to Paris, to confront his fate before the fortune-telling machine.

As Picard uncovers Lazare's past and a trail of mysterious clues, he soon realizes that there may be more to this conjurer than meets the eye. Lazare is not only behind a series of brutal decapitations of young women, he may also hold the key to eternal life itself.
